Tension briefly flared in Nandigram on Wednesday after “Jai Bangla” slogans were raised at BJP leader and Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, prompting a sharp reaction. The incident occurred while he was visiting the area, reportedly to meet a local Muslim family, when a group of people surrounded him and began chanting slogans.
Visibly agitated, Adhikari stepped out of his car and turned toward the crowd, warning them against such behaviour. “Things will not be allowed like in the 2021 elections. Times have changed. Don’t behave like this,” he said. He further asserted his right to visit all communities, adding that he would continue reaching out to Muslim households and that assistance had been provided to many through his MLA office.
The situation intensified momentarily as BJP supporters at the spot raised counter-slogans of “Jai Shri Ram.” The incident took place in the Dinbandhupur area under Booth No. 49 of the Nandigram Assembly constituency, drawing political attention amid the ongoing election atmosphere.
The All India Trinamool Congress criticised Adhikari, claiming his outreach reflects concerns over electoral prospects and diminishing support. Despite the confrontation, law and order remained under control, with police and central forces present in the area. The situation normalised shortly after Adhikari left, with no further unrest reported.
